Overview of Plastic Injection Molding

Plastic injection molding is a common process used to make plastic components which are used by various industries. It is a speedy production process, which permits the production of high quantities of the same plastic product in a short time frame. The high-performance qualities of plastic materials able to resist at high temperatures are replacing the metals which are traditionally used in the production of plastics. Plastic injection molding is a well-used process in the production of plastic components for the medical, aerospace, automobile and toy industries.

Plastic is molten within the machine used for the injection molding and is then injected into the mould under high pressure. Afterwhich, the material is cooled down, it solidifies and is then released by opening the two halves of the mould. This technique, therefore, allows the production of a fixed-sized pre-defined plastic product. For this reason, in order to facilitate the process, the parts used within the injection molding process need to be designed very carefully by either a qualified designer or specialised engineer. Afterwhich, a tool-maker needs to create the mould, according to the design, usually using materials such as steel or aluminium. So, the injection molding process actually can be sub-divided into three phases: 1.Injection time 2.Cooling time 3.Resetting time

By reducing these times, production costs go down, making the whole process more profitable.

Applications:

Plastic injection moulding is the preferred production method for most mass-produced custom plastic parts, due to its high output rate and consistency of quality. These products include but are not limited to:

Automotive parts – dashboards, bumpers, grilles.

Electronic components – electrical connectors, enclosures, protective sleeving.

Medical devices – syringes, valves, dishes.

Consumer plastics – mobile phone cases, bottle caps, toys.

Furniture parts – seat cushions, chairs, seat covers.

Advantages of Injection Molded Parts

Ability to use multiple materials simultaneously, including multiple types of plastic as well as multiple colours.

Ability to design and manufacture intricate and complex geometrical shapes – as a result of the exceptionally high pressures that the moulds are applied with in the process.

Fast production, leading to a high output rate and efficiency.

Low labour costs due to the process being highly machine orientated.

Repeatable process, leading to a consistent quality of products.

Environmentally friendly process with little waste – scrap plastic is reground and re-used in the process.

Produced parts need little work after the ejection since they have a more-or-less finished appearance.

Disadvantages of Plastic Injection Molding Parts

High initial cost to set up the machinery properly.

Not as cost effective if used to produce only a low volume of parts.

Moulds need to be designed to a high standard, which takes skilled workers.

Injection moulding is just one of the processes carried out in plastic manufacturing plants. Once the plastic parts are manufactured, they are bonded together to make a product. As a result, bonding plastics is a process just as important as producing them.

Injection molding is one of the most often-used manufacturing processes for creating plastic parts. Thanks to its high-precision, repeatability, and cost efficiency at scale, injection molding is used to make a variety of products and parts from the smallest medical insert up to large automotive & aerospace and defense parts. The injection molding process requires an injection molding machine, raw plastic material, and a machined mold. The raw plastic material is first melted in the injection unit and is then injected into the mold — most often machined from steel or aluminum — where it cools and solidifies into the final plastic part. The key steps in the injection molding process are clamping, injection, cooling, and ejection.

Injection molding & injection moulding is the most commonly used manufacturing process for manufacturing plastic parts. It refers to the method that under a certain temperature, the plastic material completely melted by screw stirring is injected into the mold cavity with high pressure, and then cooled and solidified to obtain the injection molded product. This method is really cost effective and it’s suitable for the mass production of complex shape parts. There are mainly six stages: mold closing, glue injection, pressure maintaining, cooling, mold opening and product removal. Molding also has the highest variety of materials, colors, and configurations when compared to CNC machining or even 3D printing. Beyond materials, injection molded parts can have custom cosmetics, polishes, or surface textures.

Injection moulding uses a special-purpose machine that has three parts: the injection unit, the mould and the clamp. Parts to be injection-moulded must be very carefully designed to facilitate the moulding process; the material used for the part, the desired shape and features of the part, the material of the mould, and the properties of the moulding machine must all be taken into account. The versatility of injection moulding is facilitated by this breadth of design considerations and possibilities.
